If you're ever near Birmingham's southside-Five Points area, you must stop by Pop's Neighborhood Grill! And if you're a fan of old 80s rock-n-roll or anime, you're in for a treat. The walls are lined with old pictures, posters, and flyers from musical acts who have crossed paths with the city of Birmingham. In addition, there are some pretty dope anime posters there as well. Pop's has a nostalgic feel, that retro fast food feel with some good 'ol southern charm behind the counter. The young woman behind the counter always has a smile and brings out your food when it is ready, and the men in the kitchen are WORKING WORKING! I didn't know what to expect when I entered with my gang of co-workers, but we all wanted something simple but good. I decided to try the hot dog this time around. I'm more of a boiled, or grilled hot dog type guy, so when my to-go box came out, I was surprised to see that my frank had been not only slightly split open lengthwise but also cooked on a flat grill. It sorta threw me off a bit, but I was hungry and didn't mind. I took a shot at Pop's Chicago Dog with mustard, onions, peppers, tomatoes, pickles, and a side of fries. I didn't know how the tomato would do with a hot dog, but it was very good. And if you're looking for an all-beef hot dog, they have them! Overall, the flavor profile of the hot dog with its toppings reminded me to make a mental note to "please come back again." The seating was pretty standard for a retro fast-food place. The seating area was clean, I mean nothing immaculate, but I wouldn't expect that here with the volume of customers; you come here for good quick food and a quick chat with other patrons waiting for their orders. Other than that, you could be a loner, stand up and stare out of the front windows, and watch traffic race up and down 20th St S from or to the Vulcan until your order is called. I'd think that the pandemic would have been a challenge for them because there wouldn't have been much they could have done in terms of social distancing, but I could see a "3-5 person maximum at a time for takeout orders only" scenario. Environmentally friendly as far as plateware, cups, and utensils? No, they're not that, but if you're trying to satisfy a craving for some good hot dogs, wings, burgers, or a deli sandwich, kindly overlook the immediate impact you'd have on the environment, and check out Pop's, your appetite will thank you momentarily.

Decided to stop in on a quick lunch break. There were plenty of tables to inside. I was pleasantly welcomed in by the cashier. She was very helpful in picking menu options. We decided on The Country Club and the Slamming Bacon cheeseburger. It was definitely cooked to order and truly didn't take too long to get to the table. The fries were well seasoned and perfectly crisp. The burger was good but the sandwich was amazing! It was even better than I imagined and huge. Prices were pretty reasonable for the nice portion size too. For two meals we paid about $27. We will definitely be back to try their breakfast!

Absolutely worth coming to if you're in Birmingham. We were here for the day and we only eat at locally owned diners/restaurants. So glad we saw this place on Google. The owner is super nice and the food was delicious. I had their version of a Philly cheesesteak and the wife had biscuits and gravy.

I ate at his spot today and it was really good. It is right around the corner from my office so a nice little walk. Upon entering, the outside looked clean. As I entered, very small place and several people inside eating. The young lady who took my order was very polite and really good at discussing the menu. I ended up with the Pop's Hot Beef (Special) Dog with a bag of chips and a drink. Let me tell you, it was delicious! The place was very clean and there were no COVID precautions. The environment was very nice and friendly.

Pop's presence at Pepper Place farmer's market every Saturday let me in on a little secret that every Birmingham resident should know: bacon slaw dogs are the perfect weekend breakfast food. Just...go. Get one. Get two. Thank me later.

I got the Pop's Hot Beef Special with fries and a sweet tea. My wife got the Slaw Dog with fries and a coke. Both were fantastic. The hot dogs were juicy and the fries were cooked perfectly. The service was excellent as always. The girl at the counter is always fast and friendly. She has the best personality. The food came out quick and she served it to our table instead of us having to pick it up. The vibe is so cool here. They have great retro memorabilia and autographed comics and artwork. It's always such a fun experience. The price might be high for some for a hot dog, but I feel like the experience and service definitely make it worth it. I did not see any COVID protocols in place. Like much of the city, Pop's seems to be over COVID and back to full service business.

BACON IT TO THE LIMIT! Pops neighborhood grill is a staple to South Side! Located towards the top of Five Points south, Pop's serves up some basic breakfast and lunch foods! I have always seen this place in passing, but since their hours are very limited, (Monday through Friday 6am-3pm), I was unable to make it work until this morning. After dropping a package off at UPS this morning I was beginning to get a hankering for something for breakfast. Something hearty that would tie me over for the next couple hours while I am at work. I settled for a bacon, egg and cheese on white toast. I have been looking for a good ol fashion deli where I can get a Bacon, Egg & Cheese Sandwich from for a while now. Little did I know there was one right under my nose and right around the corner from my apartment. The inside of pops looks very much like a typical deli environment. They have counter service and some breakfast and lunch options too. They have a soda fountain that has coke products in it and some coffee urns as well! The staff was fun and energetic for 8:30 am which is always great to see. People who have fun at work, make their work environment friendly for all! If you are in the area and have a hankering for a good old fashioned breakfast sandwich, this is the place for you to try out! Just please not their hours and that they are not opened on he weekends either. (I don't think they need to be opened on weekends, they probably make enough during the week that they can give their staff a break)! I will be back for sure!
